8.8 Earthquake Hits Chile

8.8 Earthquake Hits Chile

Chile Earthquake 2010 A Bad Earthquake After Yesterday’s Scare. Japan experienced a 7.0 earthquake off their coast yesterday, prompting tsunami warnings. The Japan 2010 quake didn’t do any damage or hurt anyone as it was at sea; however, Chile was not so lucky.

Today, an earthquake registering 8.8 on the Richter Scale hit the Latin American country of Chile, prompting tsunami warnings throughout the Pacific. The American state of Hawaii is under high alert, as many experts fear that it is possible that they could receive a tsunami, aka tidal wave, as a result of today’s earthquake.

A 7.7 foot wave was seen off the coast of Chile. The tsunami warning in Hawaii is precautionary.

So far, 122 people have died as a result of the Chile earthquake 2010.It’s being compared to last month’s incident in Haiti, which devastated the area of Port au Prince.

The devastation is horrific. Reports indicate that there’s only 3 stories of a 15 story building left standing in one area. A key bridge connecting north and south Chile is inoperable. The Santiago airport will be closed for at least the next day.

Aftershocks are already being felt – with some of them registering at 6.9 on the Richter scale. This tragedy is devastating, and the effects could potentially be felt as far away as Japan and Russia.

Yo Juice thanks for the post. I was born there and have most my family still there. Haven't gotten a hold of some. I just hope they're ok.

Thanks guys I really appreciate your concern. I was able to get a hold of every one and they're all ok. Most of my family live in Santiago which is pretty far from the epicenter, but the magnitude of the quake was still very strong there. My dad was thrown out of his bed when it happened. So far, more than 700 people have been confirmed dead and many more are still missing. This could have been a lot worse, but thankfully all buildings must be built to withstand strong earthquakes due to one that occurred in 1960 which was rated at 9.5 on the Richter scale, which to this day is the strongest earthquake ever recorded. Again, I just wanna say thanks for your concern. I really appreciate it. I'll do my best to keep you guys posted.

For any one interested, here are some links on some info about what happened
Chile 2010 Earthquake - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Chile_earthquake

Richter Scale - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_magnitude_scale
Here they give you a comparison of how the Richter values vary in strength.
